Things are moving quickly at Gangplank Tucson. Last week we had our first event, based on the Dave Gray book, ‘Gamestorming‘. Utilizing these exercises was a creative way for us to bring out future participant’s ideas about what Gangplank Tucson should be. Andrew Lenards kindly led the event, to a much larger than expected group!
The first game, ‘Help me Understand, turned into a rapid fire Q&A session due to the size of the group, with Jacki and Scott winging the answers as best we could. Fortunately, the Gangplank HQ crew has filled in the blanks where we couldn’t, creating a strong foundation on which to build the Gangplank Tucson space.
Below is a first in a series of blog posts written by Gangplank HQ and Gangplank Tucson to address topics raised during the Gamestorming events.
Naturally, the most critical piece of any Gangplank is going to foster the most discussion. Questions revolved around six main topics: Structure, Cost, Benefit, Identity, Networking, and Events.
In the beginning…
The first Gangplank discussions revolved around the idea of structure. Should we charge like a traditional coworking space? What would we charge? Should there be members? Exclusive or inclusive? At one point, there was even talk of charging only $1.00, just to establish membership.
Ultimately, the decision not to have membership or leadership structure followed our value of collaboration over competition. Fees, paperwork, and hierarchies all create barriers to participation. Therefore, we do not have membership levels…simply participants. We’re a show-up-ocracy…to be a Gangplanker you simply need to be here.
The Anchor process is equally as organic. The first Anchors were invited to house in Gangplank and then helped shaped what Gangplank became. Now, following a trial period and interview, Anchors are selected based on their fit within our culture. Space is our only limit, participation in initiatives and modeling behavior for the space our only requirements.
Anchors are expected to participate in weekly check-ins regarding Gangplank initiatives. Initiatives are goals and programs that work to fulfill Gangplank values, such as Gangplank Academy, Gangplank Jr, Gangplank Studios, etc. Each Gangplank affiliate will have its own culture and initiatives, proposed by their participants and Anchors.
